FAO report shows Ford’s refusal to fight climate crisis will cost Ontario a fortune: NDP

QUEEN’S PARK — Peter Tabuns, Interim Ontario NDP Leader, released the following statement in response to the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) report on the costs the climate crisis will have for the province’s public transportation infrastructure:

“Ontarians are already paying the price for the climate crisis, including the costs of cleaning up after flooding and tornadoes and fixing damaged properties. The FAO’s new report shows that the impacts of the climate crisis will pile on billions to the province’s public transportation infrastructure costs — and even more if we don’t invest in adapting our infrastructure to make it climate-resilient.

Doug Ford’s anti-environment crusade is deepening the climate crisis, which will cost us a fortune. Mr. Ford is actually increasing the risk of flooding with his approach to public infrastructure, by allowing his developer buddies to pave over farmlands and wetlands. And Mr. Ford is teaming up with climate change deniers like William van Wijngaarden to fight young people in court who are advocating for a livable future.

We can’t keep wasting time dawdling on meaningful climate action. The longer Ontario takes to get serious about the climate crisis, the more the province will pay for the consequences. Today, the government should commit to investing in adapting Ontario’s public transportation infrastructure to withstand the impacts of the climate crisis, so we can save the province billions.”
