NDP: Ford must act to stop Sudbury LifeLabs closure and protect Northern health care

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP Shadow Minister for Health MPP France Gélinas called on the Ford government to do the right thing by Northern Ontarians, and keep community medical laboratory services in Sudbury:

“The closure of the Sudbury lab by a for-profit American company is a direct blow to Northern Ontario’s already limited health care resources. Over 10,000 people have signed petitions, and hundreds have spoken about the devastating impact on jobs, training, recruitment, and people health.

“Instead of strengthening local capacity, this government is paying an American company that is actively pulling services out of the North, while refusing to fund Northern hospitals that could deliver these services better, faster, and closer to home.

“This decision puts the stability of our health care system at serious risk in the Northeast. The government must immediately step in to protect Sudbury lab analysis services and allow Northern hospitals to get paid for community lab services.’’
