Official Opposition NDP issues statement on Donald Trump’s latest tariff hikes

QUEEN’S PARK – Leader of Ontario’s Official Opposition NDP, Marit Stiles, and Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Catherine Fife, issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s latest tariff hikes:

“Every escalation and provocation from Donald Trump adds to the uncertainty and fear that Ontario’s workers are facing right now,” Stiles said. “In the face of this, Canadians want their leaders to stand firm to protect our jobs, our communities and our values. But we don’t have to wait and see what Trump will do next—we need to start today.

“We can bring hope and a sense of stability to people by investing in a more resilient, self-reliant Ontario economy that keeps people working, grows our domestic industries and delivers the public infrastructure we need. That means making firm choices to Build It Here, Buy It Here–supporting local jobs and industries every step of the way. It’s time to go all-in for an Ontario that working people can afford.”

MPP Fife said, “Our Advisory Council on Tariffs and Economic Security has met with industry and union leadership, experts and community leaders and it’s clear that the people of Ontario have the solutions. We just need the government to listen and invest where it matters.

“Opportunities exist. We can use Ontario lumber to build the thousands of homes we need, we can invest in expanded food processing capacity to support farmers, and we can get our universities off life support so they can fuel innovation and the next generation of made-in-Ontario ideas. This challenging moment offers an opportunity to course correct and come out stronger and more self-reliant.”
