Wong-Tam: How many more survivors need to be denied justice before Ford’s Conservatives finally address the mess in Ontario’s courts?

QUEEN’S PARK – Official Opposition NDP critic for Attorney General Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre) has been sounding the alarm on the brewing crisis in Ontario’s courtrooms. They have raised questions about slashed funding, political meddling with judicial appointments, staffing issues, and more.

"Earlier today, we heard about yet another sexual assault case that was delayed and later thrown out due to lack of resources in our courtrooms. How many more must be left without justice for the Conservatives to take this seriously? How many more survivors must go through this harrowing process and be left behind by our system for the Premier to recognize that our justice system is failing Ontarians?” said Wong-Tam about an earlier media report about a sexual assault case that was thrown out of court because of double-booking and crown delays.

“Amidst the crisis in our court system, this government has slashed funding - $80 million worth of base funding – from the Ministry, adding insult to injury for the survivors who are being denied justice by our system. This is shameful and untenable. We need urgent action now.”
